Environmental Approvals

MRP Technical Consulting provides specialist air quality services to support environmental approval applications for major projects across Australia. We work across multiple sectors including mining, oil and gas, industrial and infrastructure, where approvals depend on technically defensible assessment, clear regulatory reasoning and practical emission management outcomes.

Air quality consulting for environmental approvals

Projects with significant air emissions must demonstrate to regulators that potential air quality impacts can be effectively managed to protect public health and the surrounding environment. MRP supports environmental approvals by working with clients to identify and understand potential air quality risks, applying robust modelling and practical insight to manage those risks, and ultimately delivering clear, regulator‑aligned documentation that supports approvals while protecting communities and the environment.

We understand how regulators interpret air quality information and what constitutes defensible evidence. Our work is structured to clearly demonstrate compliance with applicable criteria, while transparently addressing uncertainty, assumptions and residual risk.

Experience and credentials

When you engage MRP, you gain direct access to senior air quality expertise.

Our firm is led by Martin Parsons, a CASANZ Certified Air Quality Practitioner and recipient of the CASANZ Innovation and Excellence in Air Quality Award (Industry Excellence category). Martin has more than twenty five years of experience delivering air quality studies for Australia’s largest and most technically challenging projects, including direct experience working with environmental regulators as an external specialist technical reviewer.

This dual perspective developing approval documentation and critically reviewing it on behalf of regulators allows MRP to anticipate regulatory concerns and address them proactively within approvals and supporting studies.

What’s involved

Each project begins with a structured assessment of potential air quality risks. This typically includes a combination of monitoring, emissions estimation and dispersion modelling to characterise existing conditions and predict project-related impacts.

Based on these findings, we develop targeted mitigation measures and emission controls to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements. We also support clients through regulator engagement, technical responses, conditions setting and transition from approval into construction and operations.

Air quality monitoring

Air quality monitoring

We design and implement ambient air quality and meteorological monitoring programs to establish baseline conditions, validate modelling inputs, and demonstrate ongoing compliance with approval and licence requirements.

Air quality monitoring
Air dispersion modelling

Air dispersion modelling

Using models such as AERMOD and CALPUFF, we simulate how pollutants disperse under local conditions to assess compliance with air quality criteria and inform emission controls.

Air dispersion modelling services
Air quality impact assessments

Air quality impact assessments

We identify emission sources, quantify emission rates, and predict ground-level concentrations at sensitive receptors to provide the technical basis for EPA referrals and works approval applications.

Air quality assessments
Health risk assessments

Health risk assessments

For projects near communities, we evaluate exposure pathways and estimate pollutant doses to characterise health risk against health-based criteria, particularly for complex or multi-pollutant emission profiles.

Air quality management plans

Air quality management plans

We develop tailored management plans that set out control measures, trigger levels, and monitoring requirements to address dust, odour, emissions, and occupational exposure across all project phases.

Air quality forecasting

Air quality forecasting

We develop forecasting solutions that give you the ability to act before an air quality issue occurs, supporting real-time operational decisions and proactive environmental management.
